The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Adewale Adeniyi has been honoured by the Defence Correspondent Association of Nigeria (DECAN) for his outstanding leadership in strengthening border security, facilitating legitimate trade and promoting transparency and effective public communication.
Adeniyi received the awards on behalf of the Service at DECAN’s 2026 Conference and Awards Ceremony held in Abuja on October 12, in recognition of the NCS’s contributions to national security, economic protection and stakeholder engagement.
The awards recognised the Service’s performance in border security, trade facilitation and national economic protection, as well as its commitment to outstanding public communication and stakeholder engagement in support of national security.
In its commendation, DECAN highlighted the Customs Service’s intensified anti-smuggling operations, intelligence-driven enforcement, revenue generation and adoption of technology to facilitate legitimate trade and combat trans-border crimes.
The association also acknowledged the Service’s efforts to strengthen public awareness and transparency through the office of its National Public Relations Officer, noting that effective communication had helped improve public understanding of Customs operations, modernisation initiatives and statutory responsibilities.
It further noted that technology, data analytics, intelligence gathering and inter-agency collaboration had become increasingly important in addressing smuggling, trafficking and other illicit cross-border activities, while protecting Nigeria’s economic interests.
The recognition underscores the growing importance of effective communication and intelligence-led operations in modern security management, particularly as the Nigeria Customs Service pursues reforms aimed at improving operational efficiency, securing the nation’s borders and supporting the Federal Government’s economic objectives.
The DECAN conference, themed, “Beyond Kinetic Warfare: Harnessing Technology and Intelligence-Led Operations for Nigeria’s National Security,” brought together senior military and security officials, government representatives, policymakers and journalists to examine emerging security threats and strategies for strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture.
Participants deliberated on the role of technological innovation, intelligence sharing, coordinated operations and effective public communication in addressing the country’s evolving security challenges.
DECAN is a professional association of journalists covering defence, security and military affairs in Nigeria.
The association promotes accurate and responsible security reporting while fostering constructive engagement among the media, government and security institutions.
