The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has directed senior officers of the Nigeria Police Force to adopt more proactive, intelligence-driven and adaptive policing strategies to tackle the country's evolving security challenges.
The charge was given on Tuesday during the monthly conference of strategic senior officers held at the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Peacekeeping Centre, Force Headquarters, Abuja, where the nation's security situation and ongoing policing operations were reviewed.
Addressing Deputy Inspectors-General, Assistant Inspectors-General, Commissioners of Police and other senior officers, the IGP noted that Nigeria continues to contend with security threats including kidnapping, armed robbery, terrorism, banditry, cult-related violence, farmer-herder conflicts and cyber-enabled crimes.
He stressed the need for stronger leadership, improved coordination and effective operational responses to ensure that the Force remains ahead of criminal elements.
Disu disclosed that since the last strategic conference in May 2026, police operatives across the country had recorded significant operational successes, including the arrest of eight suspected terrorists, 55 kidnapping suspects, 65 armed robbery suspects, 29 murder suspects and 42 suspected cultists.
According to him, the Force also rescued 88 kidnapped victims and recovered 114 firearms, 843 rounds of ammunition and 28 stolen vehicles during various operations nationwide.
The IGP further directed Commissioners of Police to strengthen intelligence gathering, deepen community policing initiatives and institutionalise regular engagements with traditional rulers, religious leaders, youth groups, market associations, transport unions and other key stakeholders.
He emphasised that public trust and community partnership remain critical to effective policing and crime prevention.
Reaffirming the Force's commitment to professionalism and accountability, Disu urged senior officers to lead by example, maintain discipline within their commands, prioritise personnel welfare and ensure strict compliance with established operational procedures.
He also highlighted the importance of effective media engagement in promoting public understanding of policing activities and countering misinformation.
The Nigeria Police Force, he said, remains committed to intelligence-led policing, strategic leadership and community partnership as it continues efforts to safeguard lives and property and strengthen internal security across the country.
