The Federal Government has pledged its commitment to environmental remediation, sustainable development of Ogoni land.
The minister, Federal Ministry of Environmental, Balarabe Abbas Lawal made this known in his speech at the commissioning of water facility in Bomu and Kporghor communities in Gokana and Tai Local Government Areas.
"The Federal Government of Nigeria remains steadfast in its commitment to environmental remediation and sustainable development of Ogoni Land. We are dedicated to addressing the adverse impacts of oil exploration and ensuring a healthier and more prosperous future for its residents".
The minister said the federal government will continue to actively engage with the Ogoni communities, hold consultations, incorporate community feedback and ensure that the voices of Ogoni people are heard and respected.
" These projects, undertaken by the Hydro-Carbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) signifies a pivotal step in our collective journey towards environmental restoration and sustainable development in the Niger Delta region.
"The importance of clean and accessible water cannot be overstated. It is a fundamental human right and a cornerstone of public health, economic development and overall well-being. As we inaugurate these facilities, we are not merely turning on a tap but opening the doors to improved health, enhanced quality of life and a brighter future for the communities of Bomu and Kporghor.
Lawal stated that the achievement is a testament to the power of collaboration, HYPREP's dedicated efforts combined with the support of various stakeholders who have made the projects a reality.
He therefore commends the engineers, planners, community leaders and every individual who has contributed to the success of the projects.
"Your hard work and commitment is deeply appreciated. However, while we celebrate this milestone, we must also acknowledge the broader context in which these projects exist. HYPREP will continue to execute meaningful projects like this in order to improve the quality of lives of the Ogoni people".
He call on members of both communities to take it as a duty to safeguard and ensure optimal usage of these facilities.
Earlier in his welcome address, The project Coordinator of the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) Nenibarini Zabbey said the event reflects the new spirit of accelerating the Ogoni cleanup in alignment with Priority 3, Deliverable 3 of the Renewed Hope Agenda.
"The agenda emphasizes the importance of environmental sustainability and community empowerment as critical pillars for sustainable development. HYPREP is proud to contribute to this national agenda, reflecting a new spirit of determination and action.
"The commissioning of the Bomu and Kporghor water facilities marks another milestone in our collective journey toward successfully implementing the UNEP Report on Ogoniland recommendations.
" Our land and shoreline remediation efforts have seen remarkable advancements, with several contaminated sites being rehabilitated across Ogoniland. We are strengthening healthcare facilities across the four Local Government Areas of Ogoniland. The Centre of Excellence for Environmental Restoration (CEER) is at a 60.8% completion rate, and a committee has been established to recommend a framework for its operations. Progress is being made on the construction site of the Ogoni Specialist Hospital, while the Buan Cottage Hospital has just been roofed. The training of 5000 Ogoni youths and women in 20 skill areas is nearing completion, and the Honourable Minister has graciously approved the provision of skill-specific starter packs to trainees among others".
Zabbey noted that HYPREP is undertaking the world’s largest restoration of oil-degraded mangroves.
"So far, we have planted 514,819 mangrove seedlings. While restoring mangroves through assisted planting, reducing mangrove harvesting pressure is also necessary.
" We must remain steadfast in our resolve to achieve a cleaner, healthier, and more prosperous Ogoniland. Today's commissioning of these water facilities and other events testify to what we can accomplish through sustained collaboration, dedication, and a shared vision".
