The Federal Executive Council ( FEC) , on Monday approved a supplementary budget of N2.17 trillion for 2023
Atiku Bagudu, Minister of Budget and Economic Planning disclosed this on Monday, while briefing the State House Journalists after the weekly FEC meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja
He disclosed that the N2.17 trillion supplementary budget will be used to fund urgent national issues, including a N605b for security and national defence to sustain gains of security.
Others include N200b for supply of agricultural production, N210b for wage awards recently approved for Nigerian workers covering the period from September to December, N400b of the fund is set aside for cash transfer to vulnerable and poor Nigerians for the period October and November
He announced that N100b will go to the Federal Capital Territory, (FCT ), while N18b is set aside for the Independent National Electoral Commission ( INEC ), for the November, 2023 governorship elections in Kogi, Imo and Bayelsa states.
The sum of N5.5b is set aside for students loans, while another N200b is for capital supplementation
According to him, the Council considered a request for supplementary appropriation which is a second for 2023 and graciously approved the sum of N2,176,791,286,033 as supplementary
The Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, said FEC granted approval on the Coaster roads running from Lagos to Port Harcourt to Cross River and then one of the harvest roads to Trans-Sahara route, which is running from Enugu-—Abakaliki-Ogoja down to Cameroon is Africa Trans-Sahara, another road under phase 2 also from Badagry to Sokoto. So, it was approved to be into finance in a model of EPC + F that's engineering, procurement, construction and then plus Financing.
Dele Alake, the Minister of Solid Minerals, said the FEC approved the Ministry's Memorandum of Understanding ( MoU) signed on the backdrop of the federal government engagements with German technical team that visited Nigeria on Sunday
He disclosed "that the agreement has the potentials to save Nigeria millions of dollars, because even the gathering of geo data is very very expensive"
Bosun Tijanni, Minister of Digital Economy, gave an update from the Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy as it relates to government's job creation agenda
He disclosed that the plan is to create descent and quality jobs for young people across the country.
" We have started a new project that we call the 3 million technical talent. And this is a programme where we aim over the next four years to train 3 million technical talents but also find sustainable ways to put them into jobs.
" We're happy to announced that while we were targeting just 30,000 for the first batch, we've actually received an application of over 550,000 applications from across the country. I think the spread in the application is also why we're extremely excited about this programme.
He disclosed that his Ministry is in deep conversations with state governors and different partner organizations.
" An announcement was made last week where IHS one of the local infrastructure company committed N1 billion towards the programme. We've been to states like cross river state, we've been engaging states like Kwara state, Ogun state, where we're looking to share some of the infrastructure in the process of being able to deliver this training programme to this applicant.
He disclosed that the government is creating technicians that will be suitable for the European markets currently having challenges with aging population.”
Nyesome Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), said Council approved the ward of contract the construction of access roads for the Abuja light rail.
He disclosed that this is in line with the President's directive that very soon he would want to ride on the right rail.
"Now that would not be possible if there are no access roads for commuters in communities around. Last week, council approved for a lot 3 but this was has to do with Lot 4. Lot 4 has to do with communities around the airport. If we don’t create access road it will be difficult. And so approved to Messers CCPCC at the cost of N5.5 billion."
